Starting up classes again starting tomorrow. Can anyone recommend a good, preferably free, C Compiler?

Are you working in Windows or Linux?

edit:: We used the GCC compiler in Linux: http://gcc.gnu.org/

...and Dev-C++ for Windows: http://www.bloodshed.net/devcpp.html (which I believe still uses GCC as the compiler)

Do you actually mean C only, or is C++ fine?

On windows, you'll never find a better debugger than the Visual C one. It's a little overwhelming how many different tools there are, but at the same time, that's also really nice. If you're like me, the ability to step through and see the code as it's running will help you out a lot. Especially if you're doing C/C++ where you'll have all sorts of pointers and bullshit.

The express version is free. I'm not sure what you don't get with Express, but I'm sure it'd meet most of your learning requirements. Visual C used to differ from ANSI C in a few ways, but they've mostly cleaned up their act.

If you just want some hardcore C/Unix type stuff, you can get GCC for windows as well. I think you probably have to install cygwin though.

It's just C and I'm sure that the express version will get the job done just fine for this level of course. Thanks.

You know what, we actually used Studio for my C# class and it was awesome. Sorry, I totally forgot about that.

Everyone hates on MS, but their developer tool set is pretty amazing. I think it'll be particularly useful for you if you're just learning. There are so many ways to see "what's happening"

Eclipse is open source, available for both Windows and Mac, and can be used as an IDE for all sorts of programming languages depending on which plugins you install.

It's true. Microsoft really cares about developers.

He did it again last year at Build as a joke. It was kind of amazing.

Not even a week into my Eastern Religion class and I'm already getting passive-aggressive comments from the course instructor. Out-fucking-standing. Eh...

The very first comment to my post in the discussion thread was a thank you for posting during the correct time period in future discussions.

Good thing I have the passive-aggressive college forum nazi to keep me in check. Rolling Eyes
