Then they would have to be ban from using a phone, sms, aim and the whole internet basically. Which does happen sometimes.

Keven Mitnick was banned from the internet for like 10 years for hacking by the courts.

I am saying that if the state of NY banned these people from xbox live they need to take away their cell phones and internet access too in order to be consistent.

That they should, I agree. But I don't believe there is a precedent for the courts or the government to provide consistency with their positions.

Land of the Free???

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/us-government-hires-company-to-hack-into-video-game-consoles/11395

The U.S. government recently posted a project asking for the “Development of Tools for Extracting Information from Video Game Systems.” The listing was posted just two months ago, and last week a contract was signed with the California-based company Obscure Technologies. The U.S. is paying $177,237.50 for the job.

http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/us-government-pays-250000-for-ios-exploit/11044

Recently, the market of instead selling the hacks to governments around the world has exploded. Unsurprisingly, the most lucrative types of customers are the authorities. In fact, an undisclosed U.S. government contractor recently paid $250,000 for an iOS exploit.

Hackers today are selling zero-day exploits to government agencies via middlemen who charge a commission for setting up the deal. The organizations don’t tell the public about the code they pay for because they use it to gain access to their target’s devices. Selling to them is considered safer than striking deals with the mafia or other shady organisations because in those cases talks can go south at any time.

I figured you would be all over this one, Ex: http://www.washingtonpost.com/world/national-security/verizon-providing-all-call-records-to-us-under-court-order/2013/06/05/98656606-ce47-11e2-8845-d970ccb04497_story.html

Really, my only comment on the story is, "duh?" I guess it is a bit of a revelation that there is actual evidence of this taking place but, really, is there anyone that didn't already suspect that the Patriot Act was being used to justify just this type of thing?

The problem here is that agency is supposed to only monitor people outside the US. They should deal with threats from outside the US and protect the national security of the United States. If people within the US are calling Afghanistan, Yemen, etc. that is fine. Their contacts are outside the US.

We have the CIA, FBI, ATF, ICE, etc to investigate people within the US.

It was a few years ago that the ATT whistle-blower revealed that agency had direct links into the ATT switches/routing stations (whatever you want to call them).

Also the magazine Wired had the article last years about the $2 Billion data center in the middle of no where Utah.

That is to collect petabytes of data.

How is this news, exactly? It didn't start with the Patriot Act. Been going on a lot longer than that.

It's of course not "news," no one is surprised, but it is "confirmation" I guess, which is why people are talking about it. Like before, everyone "knew," now they know.

The only difference now is that they don't have to use their own software and resources to collect that information. Not that they still don't.

From a movie in 1998 - "Congressman Albert, How do we draw the line between protection of National Security, obviously the government needs intelligence data, and the protection of civil liberties, particularly the sanctity of my home? You've got no right to come into my home."

I think everyone knew stuff like this was going on but people did not want to believe it was being done to the average american citizen.

Now the question will be is it legal to do this to the average american citizen?

I've thought about what some of my past posts look like, out of context and out of time, many times over the past few years:
