I'm currently playing with the Galaxy Tab 3 (since my S4 broke) and it's basically the S4 with a bigger screen and no phone function. While it's a comfortable $180, I'm not sure I care for it.

So now, I'm looking at the Nexus 7 and the Kindle Fire HDX. Both (spec-wise) look awesome despite the fact that neither has expandable memory. I'm curious if any of you out there have anything good or bad to say about these devices. I have Sprint for a cell provider, so these would be the WiFi only versions and I'm looking at the 32GB version of each (since they are the same price).

Disclaimer: I did a decent amount of the work on the HDX. It's a pretty nice tablet hardware wise. Software wise, there are some +'s and -'s.

To me, this choice comes down to a few key points. What's your major use case?

1. Are you heavily invested in Google services? I use gmail, google calendar, hangouts, Google Music and voice all the time. I also have most of my apps purchased via Google Play, which makes the HDX less useful for me. For these reasons, we have a Nexus 7 in my house.

2. Who is going to be using it? If your primary use case is video, reading or shopping, and you dig Amazon services, the the HDX is a pretty good tablet. I bought the Fire HD for my nephews. It has a big, easy to use interface, great parental controls, and awesome customer support. It's got a great "All you can eat" program for kids as well where they get to stream kid's shows, read books and play kid's games at a subscription cost. The tablet wasn't really the right choice for me, but it's absolutely amazing for them.

I'm not cemented on either factions features.

What I mean is that, while I do have Amazon Prime (by accidentally not stopping the free trial), I'm not reliant on it for anything really. I know how to access the movie selection via an Android device and I could purchase books via the Kindle App, so the only thing I think I'd be missing out on is the free book from the Lending Library thing.

On the Google side, I like the Google Play access for my app needs, but I don't really utilize other functions like the Hangout (yet), gmail (though I have an account), etc.

I read that the Nexus is a bit better on most fronts, until you get to graphical performance where the Kindle allegedly puts a whoopin' on it. With it's 2.2GHz quad core, the Kindle seems the more powerful when comparing it to the Nexus' 1.5GHz quad.

As for who's using it, that's all me as far as I know. My kids both have their school issued iPads and they've never really bugged me to use my phone when they were bored with that. And they're 14 and 16, so it's not a huge issue I guess. Between Amazon Prime and Netflix, there isn't much I don't think we can't watch anyway.

There's currently no amazon video client for general android, but if you're not using it, no bigs.

The kindle app for general android is pretty good. If you're a hardcore reader, the first party tablets normally get features before third party(X-Ray, things like that). I worked on the general android Kindle app for a while. The first party one gets a lot more attention in general.

Sounds like you don't have much of a reason to go Amazon to me.

That has bugged me for a while. There's an app for iOS but not android. Is that a DRM/licensing issue?

It's a simple fix though, looked it up on YouTube and now my Android can stream from them. Granted it's via the "desktop mode" of Amazon. Not sure what an app would provide that doing this wouldn't.

Thanks for your information, Lotan. It gives me alot to consider. And I've got some time before I will make a decision though.

Unless they switched, I don't think there's any HD on desktop mode.

I believe the HDX allows you to download prime videos for offline viewing, which can be a huge plus. I think it's the first subscription based video service to do that. All together, I think video is a nicer experience if you're heavy in to videos and Amazon videos specifically on the Fire tablets.

I've heard a few different answers. I'm not sure what the real one is. The little that I know about the subject is probably something I'm not allowed to comment on. Eh...

Hopefully it was helpful. I don't actually use a tablet in my every day life very often, so I might be the wrong person to talk to. I think they're both pretty nice for the price though.

The Galaxy Tab 3 series is still Dual Core. They are almost the same as the Tab 2 series. Not much faster at all.

You have to get Note 8" or Note 10.1" for a faster CPU.

If you want to save money I would recommend the Asus HD 7, Sero 7 Pro, or last year's Nexus 7. If you want the best 7" Android tablet right now then it is the new (2013) Nexus 7.

HOWEVER, if you want to play games on your tablet some companies will be using the Nvidia Tegra 4 OEM tablet with their name on it.

Game-wise this is the fastest 7" android tablet.
