I installed the new ArcGIS PRO beta and it is 100% different looking. It now looks like MS Word.

What? I don't know about this. What is it?

Also: compositing two rasters can show dramatic changes over time. Here you can see where we moved some powerlines -- red is where they used to be, blue is where they are now, and grey is what didn't change. ALso note red tree crowns from trees cut in a timber sale, and slight blue haze around many trees indicating ingrowth. Rasters are awesome!

Here is pro:

I don't get to do any raster stuff at my current position. I saw this link about Moths in WA State - http://www.reddit.com/r/gis/comments/2o41sg/check_out_my_video_about_predicting_codling_moth/

Pro looks cool. Five bucks says we wont' see it in my office for awhile; we're just getting 10.1 now. Stupid DOD paranoia.

I like the idea of using MODIS as a pest outbreak predictor. I bet that would work just as well for mountain pine beetle, even using the same base data. I typically use MODIS to see if our fires showed up at all; it takes a bit more fire than you'd expect to be visible.

DOD Paranoia? My hospital just upgraded to MS Office 2007. And our intranet is still only kept up to date for IE.

We had NT 4.0 in the reactor plant network as late as 2004. I don't know what they're using now.

We got Office 2010 about a month ago and we are getting IE 11 this week I think. We currently use IE 9.

I think we are using 9. We'll likely upgrade in six years.

Madhatte, any tips on open source GIS software? I cannot use ArcGIS at my new position. I have started to use QGIS but the display and redraw time is rather slow. I would like to use GRASS because it has a LRS and Network dataset toolset but I know GRASS is somewhat hard to learn and catch on to because it is nothing like ArcGIS.

uDIG seems ok to view data but has no real toolbox. ArcGIS Explorer the free viewer kinda of sucks.

QGIS is not great, but it's OK. I think there's a way to use it as an interface for GRASS? I tried it once and couldn't get it to work right, but I didn't look too deep into it. GRASS is supposed to be pretty good with rasters, so it's probably worth learning eventually.

Why no Arc at the new job? That seems like a pretty weird thing to forbid, unless they are just unwilling to pay for a license.

We have a competing product called Bentley Map. It does different stuff however. It is for 3 D GIS like city planning, utilities and pipe networks.

It is an offshoot of Microstation the CAD software.

Huh. I'm surprised there's no plugin compatibility between the two.
