I used to have a roommate with a subscription to every anime rag in the universe, so I always knew what to download. I don't have that luxury anymore. What's more, the stuff that I like subbed shows up mangled on CN in the dubbed versions.

My point: I'm outta the loop, and don't dare set foot in a Suncoast for fear of spending my entire (imaginary) fortune on seasons 3-5 of Star Cruiser Yamato. I want some opinions on what's on today that's worth watching.

I am less and less a fan of long series like Inu-Yasha and Naruto. I think that a storyline that wraps up neatly in 13 or 26 episodes is a far better package deal. Remember, if you will, that I was totally nuts about Last EXILE.

Please advise on current (still in Japanese, and not yet dubbed) shows that are worth my time. I'm not interested in anything on CN -- it's too mangled for my taste. Also, note that I am a HUGE Adult Swim fan and like almost all of the AS originals -- I just hate it when they fuck up good shows for cheap ratings boosts.

I would recommend Ergo Proxy and Noein, but they don't meet your qualifications.

i'm a bit out of the loop as well. I know that some new evangelion movies are starting to be released this month in japan. they are picking up the story from about the half way point and maybe making a ending that makes sence.

I have a list of things at home that i want to look into, i'll look through it and see whats there.

If you haven't watched Death Note it's worth getting. 36 episodes long I think.

Seconded. I also really liked Wolf's Rain. A bit on the weepy environmentalist side of things background-wise, but the story drips with despair and hopelessness. And it's short.

Eh, I'm not quite sure. Just couldn't get into it, and I did try.

I grabbed Wolf's Rain a couple of years ago. I think I made it through two episodes. Something about it didn't grab me either. I can't put my finger on it.

It takes more than a couple episodes to get into. I say give it another go.

Well, OK. I'll try it again. I'm not sure it's worth my time, though -- the heavy-handed environmental slant didn't appeal to me at all, since I am sort of an environmentalist by trade and training, and can smell propaganda like a fart in a car.

Very true, but it is post apocalyptic, so that makes up for a little.

if you can handle the kidishness of it, skyland is sort of an american version of last exile, only aimed at elementary school kids. oh, and there is solar powered magic.

think thundercats age, but with a skyland motif and better writing.

also, i'm not sure it is available yet, as i think the first season is still airing. (it showes on nickelodeon, and i think you can DL it on an x-box)

no wings. they have ships along the same sort of lines as last exile. only they don't have bays of steam driven musketeers.
