Has anyone else played this? I'm reminded a bit of Minecraft, but it's 2D and a little more like a pause-able strategy game.

Indie developer, persistent world, sandbox playstyle.

There's a lot of fine grained detail (but not in the graphics, which look like something from the early 90s. The official game is actually ASCII graphics.) The developer has gone so far as to model the psychology of each dwarf, and keeping them happy is as important as keeping them safe from goblin raids.

I feel like playing it is going to teach me a thing or two about medeival fortress design.

The interface is the least intuitive thing I've ever seen on a computer. It's easier to learn a new computer language than it is to intuitively figure out how to tell a dwarf to... well, almost anything. Going through a tutorial is mandatory. So is Dwarf Therapist, a supplemental application.

Be aware that the tutorial actually covers an older version, but it's still invaluable.

Deathforce plays it with a graphic mod. He showed it to me when I was up there over the weekend, it confused the hell out of me. No thanks. I'll make him chime in about it though.

Yeah, I play with a graphic mod too. I can't imagine doing this in ASCII. I think it's worth the effort if it's your type of game, but yeah... the interface is terribad.

Brilliant game dwarf fortress, but yes the interface sucks ass. However how many games do you find with zombie whales that can walk on land and rip the head off of a dwarf?

Ah to find creatures like that you need to embark on a sinister or haunted area with an ocean being part of it.

I haven't played it, but I read about it when I was reading about Minecraft. I like the idea of games where you can build computers... I don't recall the type, but I'm pretty sure that someone made an ALU in DF...
