Thanks for the tip. I was planning on mostly getting stuff from Newegg. I could even go pick it up from them on a weekend if the shipping looks too outrageous. I bought the case and SSD today with good deals from NCIX that are expiring tomorrow, so might just go ahead and get the rest this week. Should be fun putting it all together!

Someone pointed out I didn't need that motherboard since I'm not overclocking, so I dropped that down to a H87 ASRock.

The new iCore 7 is about $330-340 in the US.

Depending on prices it maybe worth the extra $100.

How has no one mentioned this now being a thing: http://www.google.com/intl/en/chrome/devices/chromecast/

Damn it, people, I expect you to keep me informed when I'm stuck over here in a 3rd world country!

Oh, and while Google is taking over the TV connectivity market, why not take over the gaming market too,

I am not excited about the Chrome cast. Other devices do all the functions already plus it appears you need an android phone or tablet for it to work. You stream the videos off your phone to the Chrome cast (I think).

I think the new Nexus 7 is impressive but $30 too much. They needed it at the 199.99 price point.

I really do not know what to think of the Droid Ultra because the benchmarks reported online are the same speed as the Moto X. The screen seems to be the difference. I would go with the X maybe because it will get more updates and a bigger dev community probably.

The X will be $299 Off Contract.

Chromecast works with Android devices, iPhone, and laptops. Has a $35 price tag. And, because it's Google, it doesn't care where/who you get the content from.

I have a Nexus 7 playing music for me right now (it belongs to my company and is part of the project I'm managing). It's basically a large version of my droid razor, without phone service, that runs faster. I haven't yet come across any reason why I would buy it for myself.

I thought the Chromecast could only send videos to your TV but you can also share any Chrome window to the TV. (Android, iOS, Windows.)

And the boot-loader for the Chromecast was unlocked by someone online.
It uses a modified version of google tv not a modified version of Chrome OS.

From experience, it can cast any web page, but there are a couple of hiccups:
When you cast youtube or netflix, it actually streams straight from the web to the TV, so there is little lag. When you stream from chrome, it goes from the web, to your computer, and then back to the web, and then to the TV, so there is a half second between what you do in your browser and it getting updated on the TV.
Also, which may or may not matter to you, you can not get the chromecast extension for chrome for IOS. so, no web casting from your ipad or iphone. But, the netflix app and the youtube app both cast just fine from ios. Though, after figuring that out, I also figured out that adblocker also stops youtube adds, if you are using the browser. Not so much from the app...

Just ordered my Nexus 5 to replace my Motorola Droid Razr. I should have it in-hand the day after I return from my current Africa trip.

I ordered one as well, although I don't need it quite yet. I actually really like my Note 2, but the lack of updates is getting a little annoying.

My contract is up in December, and I think I'm going to T-Mobile.

My contract with Verizon is up at the end of the month. I'm going to be doing a no-contract unlimited data plan with t-mobile because they have the best international options for when I'm traveling overseas. If I end up traveling less next year, I'll probably eventually switch to Sprint just because their no-contract unlimited data is cheaper.

My plan is to try out the 30/month plan and see how that ends up. I rarely use the phone for talking anymore.

Quote:
$30 - 100 minutes talk | Unlimited text | First 5 GB at up to 4G speeds

It's 10 cents/minute after the 100, so even if I went buck wild crazy I don't think I'd end up any worse than my current Verizon plan.

It helps that Tmobile has really good coverage in Seattle.

I'd consider Sprint, but I don't hear good things about their coverage here. Verizon has been okay, but they seem to be doing everything they can to squeeze money out of people. It's gotten a little out of hand.

My only real concern is whether or not PdaNet and FoxFi will continue to work with the new phone / service. It has been pretty great not having to pay any cable/internet service bill for my apartment for the past two years or so.

If those don't work, them my data usage will probably drop a huge amount on my phone and I could potentially try out the plan that you mentioned above.

I used this:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.taiseiko.tetherWidget

Before I had a ROM that left tethering open. It worked fairly well for me, but it's possible it worked only on Verizon.

A friend was researching the $30 plan for awhile yesterday and when he tried to activate that plan online it states "For phone purchased at Wal-Mart Only".

Maybe there are ways around it.

I may pickup the LG G2 today. It seems to have a 'cult' following and is now $49.99 on Verizon.

I think you just have to order the sim card specially. My friend just did it and it's working well for him with an iPhone.

Bought a Nexus 7 today. This thing is wonderful. I might go away from the Google keyboard. The layout is messing me up.
