The advent of technology has brought us robots that can talk and cook... computer network nodes approaching the speed of light... and gps devices more powerful than military applications had intended. It isn't that any one technology is gaining popularity... all technology... indeed all knowledge, is compounding at a rate beyond most people's comprehension. Soon, we will either incorporate this wealth of knowledge... or be assimilated by it.

Choose your fate.

was that your borg tryout speach? don't practice too much, or it will sound rehearsed when you really have to give it.

General "Podcast" question: What the hell is a podcast? Isn't it just an audio file of some sort (streaming or not)?

Podcast = streaming audio

Only twist is that they are nominally a regular show, like radio only without a budget or broadcast.

So, then, why the name podcast? Don't iPods store the files for later listening? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of streaming?

I think the pod is a bit of a misnomer. I don't know much about it though. I think netcast or icast would have been a better name, but nobody consulted me when they were naming them.

It is basicly a talk radio show.

How I understand it is that the mp3 of the show is encoded or linked into a RSS feed which you can subscribe to and are automatically downloaded into iTunes/your computer and then synched to your ipod when u hook it up.

giving the name pod (Ipod) and cast (being broadcasted to your computer via RSS)

Basicly I just download the mp3 directly and stick it on my PSP.

its not streaming. it is an mp3 file embedded in an rss stream. you download the content, put it on your player, and away you go. so i guess it is streaming, in that your rss aggregator streams it off of the net, but it isn't streaming, because you don't listen to the content straight off of the web. you dl the file and listen some other time that is convienient. the nice side to that is that if you listen to something like escape pod, which is fun sci fi stories(fun doesn't always mean good, however) you can usually find someone with all of the back issues on the drive who is willing to send them to you. that way you get all of the good fiction.

At the moment I'm listening to SModCast by Kevin Smith and Scott Mosier.

I'm listening to their show from 12/28/07 right now and it's pretty damn funny. At the moment Kevin Smith is discussing the birth of Jesus. I would post a link but:

a) Not sure how to get a link for a podcast.

b) I'm about to get off work and don't have time to search for how to do it.
