My favorite quote from the video is, "And I say to the grownups, if you want to deny evolution and live in your world, in your world thatís completely inconsistent with everything we observe in the universe, thatís fine, but donít make your kids do it..."

I've always been a huge fan of Bill Nye, but even more so now that I'm an adult.

On a similar note, if you haven't watched Michio Kaku's The Universe in a Nutshell yet, you are really missing out on something fantastic: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NbBjNiw4tk&feature=relmfu

It should really be required material for all highschool freshmen.

So this might just be one of my favorite things ever:

From the comments on Facebook:

Just over 22 hours until a human being launches himself out of a balloon-supported craft, 23 miles above earth, and comes hurtling towards the ground at faster than the speed of sound!

Anyone have a good explination for why people seem to be reporting, from Russia, that they heard the explosion from the meteor before the windows shattered? My though is that it might have been due to the frequency difference between the two pressure waves, causing one to travel slightly faster than the other.

Thoughts?

Speed of sound is 768 mph (you already know that), But how fast does a pressure wave travel? Can sound travel in front of the object making the sound?

A sound wave is actually a type of a pressure wave. My guess is that the frequency of the pressure wave that shattered the glass is actually outside the human range of hearing, or not a "sound wave" as we would normally define it.

I also know that factors such as temprature and pressure of the transfering material affect the speed of travel for a pressure wave. I'm sure that the frequency also affects the speed, based on how it imparts energy from one molecule to the next. I guess my question is, does anyone know how significant the frequency is in determing the rate of travel for a pressure wave. Does the wave travel at significantly different rates across its range of frequencies?

I wonder if the explosion possibly caused the meteor to break the speed of sound, causing a momentary difference between the sound and the object generating a sonic boom? http://www.physicsclassroom.com/class/sound/u11l3b.cfm

Frequency either has no or a very small effect on propagation speed. Sound travels in front of the object making it all the time, unless that object is traveling faster than the speed of sound in whatever medium. I imagine the meteor was exceeding the speed of sound throughout its entire path through the atmosphere, and that the shockwave is just from that.

Glass breaking after the boom is interesting. Do we know what the delay was? My thoughts go to the shockwave causing the window to break in a delayed fashion, either when the pressure returns to normal or from vibration. Neither of those seem to jive with the reports of people being cut from glass while looking out a window, which implies to me that the glass was blown inward.

Did the glass break after they heard the boom, or did they just hear glass after they heard the boom? Could we be dealing with a perception problem?

The idea of a later, inaudible shockwave is also interesting.

Multiple audible sonic booms, but the later ones seem much smaller. I'm guessing they're from fragments breaking off and creating additional shockwaves?
