The last couple episodes involved him going back into Al's past, when he was MIA in 'Nam and presumed dead. The reason Al was a complete schlub with women was because once he got back to the States, the only woman he ever loved had married someone else. Sam leaped into the person she married. So Sam decided to fix Al's life, making sure his girl kept the faith until his homecoming, knowing full well that once he did that, Al would never have gone into the Quantum Mechanics field and helped Sam start the Leap program. He succeeded, basically destroying any chance of him ever being able to stop leaping, and losing his only connection to his timeline and only friend. Plus, he'd never have Ziggy to tell him what the F was up with each new leap, so he was forever forced to play it by ear.

Oh, I don't know if you watched that far into the series, but they eventually discovered a higher power at work with the leaping, and Sam was working for the forces of good, while some girl was working for evil, wrecking the lives of people he already leaped in to previously, reversing his good works. I never saw the closure of that plot thread, so I'm not sure if they defeated her or what.

Crush: What you just wrote wasn't entirely accurate. I own the entire series on DVD. In the last episode, ("Mirror Image") Sam leaps to a small mining town on the day he was born and sees himself when he looks in the mirror. He finds out he's not the first time traveler when he sees someone else leap after the good deed was done. He finds out (from the guy that played Jack on MacGyver) that he will never be able to leap home, because he was chosen by God to lead this life. But every so often he would be able to choose where he leapt to, sort of like a sabbatical vacation.
In the second season he had leapt to San Diego while Al was a POW and he met Al's first wife, Beth. Al wanted him to tell her not to marry again and that he was still alive, but Sam stuck to the rules of the project and didn't tell her. In the last episode, when he found out he could choose to go somewhere in the past, he chose to go back there and told her that Al was still alive. That was the last 5 minutes of the episode. They never said whether or not Al was still part of Quantum Leap after that, or Ziggy. That's Crush's assumption. It only said, "Beth never remarried. She and Al have four daughters and will celebrate their 39th wedding anniversary in June. Dr. Sam Becket never returned home."

I also have the DVD's. I watched it to confirm. I was off on a few details, but it definitely wasn't my assumption. Sam himself clearly stated if he fixed Al's life, he wouldn't have started the Quantum Leap program and Sam would never get back to his own life, he would be constantly leaping perhaps forever. I assume you also have seen the unaired ending they were going to use before the series was "prematurely" cancelled? It was slightly different, but with the same inferences and a different ending. Basically, his image in a family photo starts to leap and that's it. I prefer the aired one, though, because the original was only a cliffhanger season finale instead of a series finale.

Actually, I didn't hear him say that at all. Plus there was the episode where Sam leaped into the younger Al, who was accused of murder. When his probability of conviction went up to 100%, Al was replaced by a stuffy British dude. Things changed, but Quantum Leap was still going on. So it's still an assumption on your part, (and a wrong assumption as well.)

No, he did say it as part of one of his soliloquies. You should rewatch it. And it is also CLEARLY inferred as part of basic show canon. It is not an incorrect assumption, it is a very correct fact. We could go on about this, but you'd still be wrong.

Hannibal Lecter is my hero and a good singer to boot! Now that's a role model!

This next guy is only an amateur at evil but at least he can move...
