Have we been getting hit by more spammers than usual? I think the last 30 out of 31 people to join the board are spammers and it just seams like we are getting hit very frequently. Is there anything we can do to stop it.

There's a couple things I could try.

awesome avatar (this is the first post i could find where you were the last person to post something). What is it from? It looks like the same claymation? as the old Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer x-mas special.

It's from "Year Without a Santa Claus," and used the same kind of models as the Rudolph Christmas special. He's Heatmiser, and Charcole's running around right now with Coldmiser as his avatar. The songs they sing in the show are terribly catchy.

And to stay on topic, the Spammers have figured out the tricks I used with the names to restrict them, and are registering in force again. I'm looking at a few mods to help deal with that at the next upgrade.

Incidentally, you do a great job with this. I didn't realize before, and now I often forget, how much you do to keep the asshats off of this board.

I really appreciate you guarding our sanctuary. You rock and I'm a brown-noser.

Sounds like somebody's vying for moderator rights.

Geez, try to give a guy some credit for his pain...

I'm not interested in being a mod. It's not necessary, we have enough of them and they do a fine job. I'm not here to be responsible & stuff. I can do that IRL. Or not.

It would, I guess, be funny to edit other people's posts occasionally, but it's just as easy to do a corrected quote, like this:

Ooh, sounds like I struck a nerve.

I just tried creating a new account. The following usernames are disallowed:

spambot
spamelot
grrlzgonwild
wassistloss
dudarfstdasnicht

Now my feelings are hurt, Glistam. I could've been a valuable, contributing member of this community, but you rejected me out of hand. Jerk.

I wish I could take credit for cleverness, but all I've done temporarily is disallow every user name. over 75% of the spam accounts are normal-sounding names that I can't filter, and they were appearing on our board at a breakneck speed. I still have over 50 accounts that registered I need to delete, like that Ahahahaha character.

I've been checking the phpBB mods for better controls against this sort of thing, but I haven't found it yet.

So are you temporarily not allowing new accounts, or are you handling them by specifically allowing names you've gotten a head's up on via pm? Just curious, I don't know anyone who wants to join at the moment.

People are PMing me that their friend couldn't register an account, and then I remove the restriction until they register.

Any reason you don't just use a CAPTCHA image verification system? Or does that not work very well?

The site uses an image verification system. It appears worthless.

Glistam, I've got a couple of thoughts/questions:

Is it possible that instead of disallowing all names, you could have the signup link lead to a message saying something to the effect of "We are currently updating our SPAM filters. We apologize for the inconvenience, but all new memberships are temporarily by invitation only."? Then creating the account could be an administrator function. Members who know someone who wants to join could PM you the username and e-mail address and you could activate the account with a temporary password. I don't want you to take on more work, but it seems like it would be less work in the long run than temporarily dropping your shield and dealing with a slew of new spammers every time someone wants to join.

Would the inclusion of a simple, multiple choice quiz in the signup process help your cause any? I'm talking about really easy questions that anyone who can read English ought to be able to answer correctly without thinking. Ten questions with five choices each might narrow the SPAMBOT odds considerably, especially if the questions were arranged randomly.

Instead of "by invitation only" how about "by application only". While I am an elitist elite about who shows up here, I'd rather we not miss out on the occational person who's cool or a friend that we have that has no way to contact us to get an invite.
