Hatte - if you know anyone wanting to move to the east coast there are two GIS related jobs here.

You have to open the link twice for these to work. I think the first time it adds a cookie.

God damn it, Trimble: you still refuse to play nice with others. What good is a GPS data collection environment where I can't even create shapefiles?

CSV, can't you just map the XY fields in ArcMap?
ArcMap can use KML/KMZ. Older versions of ArcMap you need Arc2Earth or X-Tools.

It says - Export Formats
ArcGIS XML
KML/KMZ
CSV

Sure I CAN but why should I HAVE to? Why wouldn't they just make it an export option, knowing that at least 50% of the users of their GPS products are also users of Arc? Trimble are seriously out of touch with who The Customer is. I've gone round and round with them on some engineering issues to the point where they won't even accept my calls any more. I don't believe I'll be buying any more of their products, hardware or software, until they get their corporate identity figured out.

Autodesk that makes AutoCAD has been purchasing mobile companies related to apps and services that have nothing to do with CAD. I have been wondering why they are doing that. (Speaking about corporate identity.)

I bet it's the same deal: assimilate, don't cooperate or compete. I could go on for hours about Trimble.

Can you write a macro to change .MXD's saved in one template to copies saved in another?

ALso -- got the book you sent today. Thanks! My brother's gonna want to read it, too -- he's a WWII buff.

I have been changing the page setup to paper size 11x17 and then pick the scale elements check box. Then reset the reference scale.

In my experience, exporting my finished layouts to PDF makes everything easier. Arc's print engine is crap.

So I finally upgraded to 10.1 - SP1.

For a project the managers asked me to create 18 maps and wanted them 11 x 17. I create them all 11 x 17 but they were placed into a Power Point that is 8.5 x 11.

Now all the maps have the wrong aspect ratio and are hard to see.

I heard something about that. I really like 10.1; I hope they don't mess anything up.

Madhatte - what do you think of these GIS lines? Se anything "wrong"?

Instead of building a topology to find dangles with a line dataset; you can use the vertices to points and choose dangles.

Then you have a point file of all your dangles.

Explain. I'm way too into raster analysis these days and could stand to learn a few new vector tricks.

Interesting. I can see how that would be useful for some of the things I do.

Other news: Arc 10 doesn't have the elevation profile feature any more. I was gonna use it to calculate deflection for a proposed logging setup but it's not there any more. No biggie; I probably couldn't have flown a yarder anyway.
