Just found this place who hosts DC++ hubs. I want to set one up for BEB members. I want it to be private (with a password) but without minimum required shares or slot requirements.

My question is: would y'all rather control it and do you want the BEB name involved at all? I'm not much of a SYSOP/MOD. Any ideas?

Oh, and DC++ has built in chat (both general and private messages).

Peer-to-Peer... sort of. There is a central server (the hub) to which we (the clients) connect. The hub only shows who is connected. The actual transfers are direct between clients. Thus, the hub does nothing but introduce clients to each other (in other words, it is not sharing anything).

I like the idea. If nothing else, I'll be able to get that clucking orchestra video clip from you...

Interesting. It's like LimeWire/KaZaA/whatever on a much smaller scale and you can (theoretically) trust the sender.

Only problem is the sending computer's bandwidth is limited. Thus, you will either be limited by speed or by users connected. It is not a distributed filesharing scheme like Bittorrent or KaZaa where you can grab from many users at once and thus minimize your download time. Now, as long as we keep our group small, that's no problem, but I just felt it was worth mentioning. Either way, I'm down with the plan.

This also means that DC++ shares no responsibility for sharing copywrited material since it doesn't know (nor does it care) what is transferred between computers. It only helps make the connection between them.

I doubt anyone here has an upload speed > then 384kbit so it would be slow.
Then if I do get verizon fiber and have 2 mbit up i'll be worried about them shutting off my access after uploading ~20gigs.

ISPs need to give greater upload speeds and firm written monthly limits.

none of this comcast crap if you upload/download too much we may cancel your sevice without notice.
or if your a burden to the node we will cancel you.
how do you know what is too much or if your a burden

If anyone is interested, the hub is up. I'll be on pretty much all the time. Also, it does have a built in chat and private message system.

Dork, you're in the same house as him. Just look on your shared directories.

Can't. I've been using the phonebook as packing material.

What in the hell is that supposed to mean? I'm talking about your computer. Go upstairs and ask him how to get to his stuff.
